Monty’s Law

A great piece by Mike Selvey the other day in which he introduces Monty’s Law: that the more inept the fielder, the greater the likelihood of a knob-ender coming their way.

Oh Monty!

Selvey’s analysis is that by fielding at long leg, Monty has too much time to compute, and uses the example of his stunning reflex catch against Ed Cowan in Hobart to show how he can do it, as well he should with his enormous great hands. It’s a feeling I’m sure anyone who’s ever fielded at long leg can empathise with. Selvey’s proscription is to bring Monty closer into the bat – whilst the England selectors have dropped him in favour of Big Bres.
